Possible management includes the following:

Antifungal treatment – Nystatin oral suspension (2ml held in the mouth for two minutes, to be effective, needs to be used four-hourly, for five days). It is also available in pastille form; Ketoconazole (200mg orally, once daily, for five days). There is a possibility of serious side effects; Fluconazole (150mg orally, as single dose). Unlike the others, it is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and therefore can be taken orally.

Dentures – non-metal dentures may be soaked in Milton, or in other dilute chlorine-releasing solutions; metal dentures may be brushed with Povidine–iodine solution.

Universal precautions must always be used, since candida can be transmitted by hand.

Treat the underlying causes (if they exist), such as altered immune deficiency, or wait for the problem to resolve, for example if related to antibiotic use.
